Memoirs of a Geisha and other gems of cinematography

Wed, Jan 29, 2025, 19:30
Katarzyna Jawor (Violin), Karolina Szefer-Trocha (Violin), Dawid Jadamus (Viola), Łukasz Frant (Cello), Joanna Galon-Frant (Piano)
This is the essence of chamber musicianship – we play what we like. We play for pleasure - our own and that of our listeners. The idea of chamber music is summarised in the Italian term da camera, which means playing for a chamber, a room, or a small hall. It denotes semi-private, intimate music. It is lovely when such a mood is carried into the concert hall. Today, there is an opportunity to do so because we love the tunes we already know, and there are plenty of them here. Most listeners will recognise Sting's Roxanne, Satie's Gnosienne or Barber's Adagio. Exactly like in the programme Name That Tune, after two sounds, we will already know what's coming next. Concert hall goers, on the other hand, will once again be seduced by gripping Schubert's Andante or Arvo Pärt's Fratres. Lovers of cinematic melodramas will get a handful of John Williams tunes, while refined musical gourmets will get Glass's Mishima, Vasks' Meditation and Schnittke's waltz. Not a single note goes to waste here! Adam Suprynowicz

Bancroft & Goosby

Sat, May 17, 2025, 20:00
Ryan Bancroft (Conductor), Randall Goosby (Violin), Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin
Dmitri Shostakovich’s Sixth Symphony from 1939 poses an exciting riddle, not least because the beginning and end are missing in this curious work. Instead, it begins with a long slow movement that revolves around its own axis like a giant, lonely planet in space. Followed by two very fast movements. This is how the composer himself imagined »spring, joy, youth«. It will most definitely be a splendid musical experience!

Daniil Trifonov / Piano Recital

Mon, May 26, 2025, 19:30
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Daniil Trifonov (Piano)
Daniil Trifonov’s magic is hard to resist: the fact that his pianistic resources are almost limitless is unmistakable. He also surprises his audience time and again with his expressiveness and ability to reinterpret music. Trifonov is therefore definitely one of the most exciting pianists of our time. For his recital in May 2025, the pianist will bring a Romantic programme to the Laeiszhalle in which he will showcase all facets of his ability. In addition to piano sonatas by Samuel Barber and his compatriot Piotr I. Tchaikovsky, he will also focus on the genre of dance: although Chopin’s waltzes are not really danceable, the time signature and character of the music unmistakably point to this. Tchaikovsky’s ballet music for Sleeping Beauty, on the other hand, was written especially for dance – ballerinas, dancers and stage sets pass before your mind’s eye as you listen.
